I was thinking about my post last week, “What guides YOUR design in 2009?”, and pondering if I should let trends dictate what I want my home to look like. Do I really want to make a design statement per se? Do I really want to be trendy? Do I really care what other people think? Or would I rather just be content on a daily basis and feel comfortable in my house? Can stylistic design hinder comfort and livability? I think so!
I was reading Padstyle’s blog on November 19th, titled “Make a Statement”. The theme therein refers to how, “your home should say something about you, not about what the current trends in interior design are [...] you should always keep in mind that you’ll be the one living in your home.”

I think the author raises an interesting point. Many trends going on right now don’t fit my personality. I prefer comfort and simplicity to satisfying a trend. I want a simple space to rest my head at the end of the day and really couldn’t care less if some design fashionista doesn’t approve of my design decisions.
After some inward thinking, I think Padstyle’s author is right. My home is private. Design and decor is ultimately for me alone. Of course I would like to create something presentable such that visitors would think it’s a nice place, but beyond that, I couldn’t care less about being trendy.
How do you feel about your home? Do you care about being trendy? Or would you rather be comfortable? Can you accomplish both simultaneously? I suppose it’s possible.
I feel like my approach to furnishing my living space was just radically simplified. Does this philosophy constitute a trend in itself? Style by personality alone–is that a trend? What do you think?
Sincerely,
Pat Yoshida
